*Are you a student in 7th or 8th grade who wants to take classes on nearly
any subject imaginable? Come to Spark, now two days and exclusively for
middle schoolers on March 15-16th! Spark is a two-day program, similar to
Splash, on MIT's campus. Starting this year, Spark is for students in 7th
to 8th grade only. Come take awesome classes from MIT students on a variety
of subjects from arts and crafts to hardcore math and science topics! This
year's topics include: - Psychology of Shopping - Mutant Plushie Lab -
History of The Beatles - Infinity and You - Cake Decorating 101 - A Tour of
the Elements - and many more! Spark will be on March 15th from 1pm-7pm and
March 16th from 9am-4pm this year. Spark registration is now open at
<http://esp.mit.edu/learn/Spark/studentguide.html
<http://esp.mit.edu/learn/Spark/studentguide.html>>. The class catalog is
located at <http://esp.mit.edu/learn/Spark/2014/view_classes
<http://esp.mit.edu/learn/Spark/2014/view_classes>>. Spark costs $40 (a $10
increase from last year) for the entire program, regardless of the number
of classes taken, but as with all our programs, generous financial aid is
available. Lunch on Sunday will also be provided for all registered
students, free of charge. As in previous years, registration will use a
lottery system, so there is no advantage to registering on the first day.
Enter your class preferences on our website before lottery registration
closes; all preferences submitted by then will be considered equally.
(Don't wait until the last day to submit your preferences!) By the evening
of February 28, lottery results will be released. Afterwards, you will have
a chance to adjust your schedule from the classes that still have space.
The class lottery is open now, and will close at 11:59 PM on February 27.
**** Other programs **** This year, Spark is not open to high school
students, but there are still learning opportunities available for high
school students this spring. Our seven week HSSP program still has some
open classes. Registration is open until February 23 at
<http://esp.mit.edu/learn/HSSP <http://esp.mit.edu/learn/HSSP>>; more
information about the program is available on that page. Additionally,
there are high school Splash programs running at half a dozen other
universities in the northeast. These programs are all run by distinct
student organizations at those colleges and are all somewhat different from
each other, but each has the same basic concept and structure of MIT ESP's
Splash and Spark programs. Check out <http://learningu.org/current-programs
<http://learningu.org/current-programs>> for a list of Splash programs. *
